Practical Strategies for Effective Online Teaching: An Instructional Design Perspective

As higher education continues to expand across digital and blended learning environments, effective online teaching requires more than transferring instructional materials to a learning management system. It requires intentional instructional design, structured communication strategies, meaningful student engagement, and alignment between learning outcomes, learning activities, and assessment.

This seminar introduces practical, evidence-informed strategies for designing and facilitating online courses that promote active learning, clarity, and student persistence. Drawing on institutional practices in faculty development and online course design at AUB, the session will address course structure and navigation, communication planning in online environments, strategies for designing engaging learning activities, assessment approaches in online settings, and methods for supporting students’ self-regulated learning.

Participants will leave the seminar with actionable ideas they can immediately apply in their ownteaching contexts, along with a practical framework for improving the quality and effectiveness of their online courses.
