IDG-Inspiring Study Abroad Program Design for Sustainability Education

Rafaela Rolim, Brazilian Experience
IDG-Inspiring Study Abroad Program Design for Sustainability Education.
Interactive session
Study abroad programs are powerful platforms to prepare students for today’s global sustainability challenges. This session will show how integrating the Inner Development Goals (IDGs) alongside the UN’s SDGs can transform study abroad into a catalyst for developing globally conscious, sustainability-driven leaders.
Discover how Brazilian Experience and Northwestern Michigan College co-created a transformative study abroad program. Grounded in the IDGs, students explored sustainability in Brazil through reflections, hands-on conservation, and community engagement, cultivating skills for personal growth and global action.
Rafaela Rolim is the founder of Brazilian Experience, bringing over 19 years of expertise in human development and international education, while designing transformative learning experiences that empower individuals and inspire collective action toward sustainability.
Rafaela currently serves as the Global Co-coordinator of the IDG HUBs and Networks, as well as Co-Chair of the NAFSA Sustainability Interest Group and as Vice President of the Americas Chapter of CANIE – the Climate Action Network for International Educators. Her leadership reflects a deep commitment to fostering global collaboration for a more sustainable future.

The University of the future – Advancing sustainability thinking and inner development as a blueprint for reimagining higher education
The Industry-Community Project Units at the University of Sydney offer students the opportunity to collaborate with partner organisations to address real-world challenges. Working in interdisciplinary teams, students integrate sustainability thinking into the development of their projects and extend this thinking to reflect on how their individual dispositions (guided by the IDGs) influence not only the project outcomes but also the team’s harmonic functioning.
Maria Florencia Amigó is an anthropologist and senior interdisciplinary lecturer at the University of Sydney
